common ways that medicines are administered are either by pill, liquid, topical, injection, or inhaler.  Each of these ways to administer medicine can result in a wrong dose or wrong drug medication error.  More importantly, according to a recent study performed in Nursing Homes, each of these routes of delivering medicine have different medication error rates.  The study found that pills were the safest way to take medicine.  Liquids were four times more likely to end with a medication error; topicals and injectables were 20 times more likely; and inhalers were 30 times more likely.  For more information on the study, read this Medscape article written by Nora Macready.
