What is Viread?
Viread is an antiretroviral drug that was used in the treatment of HIV. The active ingredient in Viread is Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate (TDF) link to tdf lawsuit page. TDF was originally sold under the brand name Viread. It was approved for sale by the FDA in 2001 to suppress the damaging effects of HIV in HIV positive individuals and prevent HIV from causing AIDS.
Viread is very effective in suppressing the symptoms of HIV. It has also helped prevent the spread of AIDS. But what the general public did not know is that Viread can cause severe damage to the skeletal system and to the kidney’s. Lawsuits against Gilead allege it knew Viread would cause this damage but chose to bring it to market instead of a similar drug it owns that has a much lower risk of causing these side effects.
What Damage Can Viread Cause?
Viread can cause damage to the skeletal system, severe bone damage, lactic acid build up in the blood (lactic acidosis), severe liver problems, and kidney damage.

Viread Lawsuit Allegations
In May of 2018, the first lawsuits alleging Viread was harming patients were filed against Gilead. The lawsuits allege TDF, the active ingredient in Viread, causes serious side effects. Not only did Gilead know this before it sought FDA approval to start selling the medication, but Viread attorneys allege Gilead had already developed another version of the drug called TAF that poses a much lower risk of developing these side effects.
Early testing of TAF showed it was safer with lower toxicity than TDF. But Gilead stopped clinical research for the drug and did not attempt to bring it to market immediately. Instead it brought TDF to market and sold it for the next 17 years until its patent was about to run out. During this time, Viread was earning Gilead as much as $11 billion per year. The lawsuits Claim Gilead purposefully chose to delay researching TAF until the patent for Viread was running out. This helped increase Gilead’s profits because after a patent runs out, generic drug manufacturers can make the same drug and cut into the Market share of Gilead. By waiting sell TAF until the TDF patent ran out, Gilead was able to substantially increase the length of time before it had competition selling HIV drugs.
If this was not done at the expense of Gilead’s patients it would be ok. But that was not what happened. During this time, many HIV positive Americans taking Viread with TDF had know idea of the risks they were taking or that there was a safer alternative. Many of them were Florida residents. Even the FDA tried to warn Gilead by sending it two different warning letters. Instead of taking the drug off the market, Gilead allegedly made false claims about the drug’s safety and downplayed the side effects.
The Viread lawsuits have survived a motion to dismiss because the judge hearing the case decided federal laws and FDA regulations do not bar most of the claims. This means Viread lawyers are continuing to gather evidence of potential Gilead wrongdoing.
Florida residents are filing Florida Viread lawsuits now. If you have been injured by Viread don’t get left out. The Florida Viread lawyers at Distasio Law Firm are here to help hold Gilead accountable for its actions. Viread lawsuits can help provide compensation to those injured Florida residents.

Is It Wrong to Bring a Lawsuit Because Viread Caused Damage?
Large corporate interests spend a lot of money putting out propaganda to try and convince the public there is some wrong with bringing a lawsuit for money damages. But that’s not true. The only reason anyone is bringing lawsuits against Gilead is that Gilead refuses to take responsibility for the injuries its medication has caused.
