World Alzheimer’s Month

September is World Alzheimer’s Month. Advocates and volunteers are working across the country to raise both awareness and funds for research to battle this debilitating disease. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, approximately 35 million people worldwide live with some form of dementia. Furthermore, there is no way to prevent, cure, or slow the progression of Alzheimer’s Disease. On September 21, advocates worldwide will wear purple to show their support of the fight against Alzheimer’s Disease.

Patients who have Alzheimer’s often need specific and constant care. Many of them are placed in nursing homes or assisted living facilities so they get the attention they need. Because of their difficulties remembering, they are vulnerable to mistreatment. It can be frustrating for caregivers, which can lead to nursing home abuse . Patients who suffer from Alzheimer’s are often unable to report incidents of nursing home neglect.

It is important for loved ones to be aware of the signs of nursing home abuse. Unexplained bruises or cuts, unnecessary restraints, sexually transmitted diseases, and strange financial transactions can be indicative of potential abuse. Signs of nursing home neglect include symptoms of malnutrition, unclean environment, and recurring injuries.

If there are concerns about nursing home abuse or nursing home neglect , they should be reported first to the supervisors at the nursing home. If administrators fail to address the issues, it may be time for legal action. A nursing home abuse and neglect attorney can help hold those responsible accountable for their actions.
