Alyssa Gorman Wins Distraction-Free Driving PSA Scholarship
“When I saw this prompt geared towards teenagers and cell phone usage, I knew immediately I had to use my artistic skills to submit a video pertaining to the dangers of texting and driving for young individuals.”
That’s Alyssa Gorman’s reason for submitting a public service announcement for the Distasio Law Firm Distraction-Free Driving PSA Scholarship. It’s the perfect reason, and it reflects both Gorman’s and the firm’s desire to see the next generation of young adults practice safer driving habits.
“Since the first time I drove behind the wheel, I understood the importance of making the road safe for myself and others,” Gorman told representatives of Distasio Law Firm. “Whenever I drive, I vow to never touch my phone. I rely on adjusting GPS before I drive and asking my passengers to help make phone calls for me.”
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, texting and driving is one of the worst forms of distracted driving, which in turn represents an exceedingly common cause of car accidents. As Gorman has pledged never to text and drive, she urges others in their teens and early twenties to do the same.
Who Is Alyssa Gorman?
As a student at California State University, Long Beach, Alyssa Gorman is currently pursuing her Bachelor’s degree in Drawing and Painting. She is an avid artist with an eye for detail, which helped her craft a stunning PSA to win this scholarship.
Gorman’s plan is to continue at CSULB and obtain her Master of Fine Arts from the university. Then, she said, she plans to become a college professor at either a two-year or four-year institution. “My focus will be in figure drawing and painting classes, as I am fascinated by the human figure,” she told Distasio Law Firm. “My intention is to help my students learn and grow as artists.”
In the meantime, Gorman stays busy with various pursuits. She recently volunteered at both Acai Studios and the Elk Grove Food Bank. Additionally, Gorman served in the Office of Recording Secretary for Phi Theta Kappa’s “Beta Upsilon Chapter” at Cosumnes River College in 2021 before her transfer to CSULB.
